4Challenge 2016 is approaching and BirchenallHowden will be represented in the gruelling 4 day cycle…
What is 4Challenge?
4Challenge was set up in 2015 in order to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Each year, participants take on a huge challenge, dedicating time and effort for the cause. This year, those taking part in 4Challenge will cycle from Edinburgh to Sheffield over the course of 4 days, riding 310 miles and climbing 23,000 feet!
There will be a mixture of abilities among the challengers, from cycling novices to veterans, and among the riders will be our very own Neill Birchenall. Here’s what Neill had to say about 4Challenge…
“In February 2015 our friend and colleague Matthew Lollar’s 5 year old daughter Phoebe was diagnosed with brain cancer. We did what we could to support them but the amazing people at Weston Park Hospital & The Children’s Hospital did so much more. Today Phoebe is cancer free so I will be riding in support of Weston Park Cancer Charity and the excellent care they provide.
4Challenge will be the biggest bike ride I’ve ever done in consecutive days. I used to ride long distances when I was a teenager, but I haven’t ridden anywhere near the distances I’ll be facing in 4Challenge in a very long time.
My preparations are underway, and living at the top of a hill means I get a decent amount of training in on my occasional commutes to and from the office! I know it sounds like a cliché but the thing I’m most looking forward to is getting to the finish line and completing the ride. I’m joining the challenge slightly later than the rest of the team so in terms of my goals I’m looking forward to contributing as part of team, and not just finishing, but finishing well.
The weather could be a worry. If there’s wind and rain for the whole of the four days, the ride could have a very different feel to it. Battling against the wind won’t be fun, but I’m confident my fitness will be at the right level”.
As if sending Neill as a challenger for the full 4 days wasn’t enough, BirchenallHowden have also taken the step to become a key sponsor of this year’s event along with Virgin Media Business. The BirchenallHowden “squiggle” will be proudly blazoned across all the riders' kit.
The kit was designed by a pupil at Hinde House School in Sheffield and it has a great story behind it...which you can read here.
